Dental Implants

Generally, dental implants candidates are individuals who:

  1. Are missing one or more permanent teeth

  2. Are in good general health

  3. Having enough jawbone to support an implant post

  4. Can commit to properly caring for a new implant

  5. Do not smoke

Patients without sufficient jawbone to accommodate an implant post have some options.  Dr. Vladimir Potepalov can explore bone grafting to build up the jawbone in preparation of the implant placement of mini dental implants, which do not require as much jawbone.

Dr. Vladimir Potepalov begins every dental procedure with a consultation, to review the patient’s dental health and determine the best treatment plan.  He will also answer any questions the patient may have and thoroughly explain the procedure to ease any apprehension.  Dental implantation is one of the most complicated dental procedures; however, when performed correctly, it boasts a success rate of 90 to 95 percent.

Dental implants look, feel and function like normal healthy teeth.  They make eating, speaking, and smiling easier and more natural.  Because the implant post keeps the underlying jawbone stimulated, it prevents bone loss (from lack of use).  By filling the gap left by a normal tooth, implants prevent the rest of the teeth from moving around in the mouth and causing problems with alignment and proper bite.

Implants also reduce the risk of periodontal disease, which can build up in the gaps left by missing teeth.  Implants are very easy to brush, floss and maintain.  It’s important to note that because dental implants are artificial teeth, dental implant patients are not vulnerable to cavities, by may experience periodontal disease if they have poor dental hygiene.  When properly cared for, dental implants can last upwards to 40 years.

During the first visit, Dr. Vladimir Potepalov will drill a small hole in the gums of the gap and insert a titanium screw, which serves as the base of the implant.  Then, he places a protective cap over the hole to assist the healing process.  After the hole has healed and ossointregration is complete, the patient will return for a temporary crown, which is placed over the screw.  This technique allows the gums to reshape themselves around the temporary crown before the permanent crown is inserted.  Once the gums have healed, Dr. Vladimir Potepalov will insert the permanent crown.

Once an implant post has been placed, it needs time to fuse to the jawbone. This can take up to three to six months in some cases.  During recovery, there is typically minimal swelling in the gums and face, and minor bleeding or bruising where the implant was placed.  Fitting and placing the crown can sometime be made in the office while you wait.  The office has a CEREC machine which using scanning technology to make dental crowns right in the office.

Tooth implants cost is almost always the deciding factor as to whether they are used or not, as they are truly a great leap in dental technology, and continue to diversify and improve as time passes. They offer, in all of their forms, an unprecedented level of natural look, feel, and function, that is not something that can duplicated by any other method. Current trends in dentistry and research are working to discover just how effective and versatile this technology is, but the tried and true gold standard for implants is being used to great effect every day all over the country.

Implants, like most other types of dental hardware, are largely determined by the needs and anatomical configuration of each patient. Each piece of hardware is made custom for the individual, not mass produced. This is because good fit means everything with dental hardware, impacting both the function, and the cosmetic look. Special care must be taken to conserve both, hence the custom nature of most dental work.

Tooth implants cost is impacted by the necessity of surgically implanting them, hence the name. After a patient's bone density and gum health is determined to be sufficient to accept implants, a surgical procedure is done to place the socket, or true 'implant' portion of the implant. Depending on the type of implant, a period of time is required for healing, to make sure that the implant has securely anchored itself to the bone material of the jaw. At this point, a crown is crafted to look like a real tooth, made to fit in the vacant spot, and carefully screwed into place. Sometimes, implants are used as anchor points for other types of hardware, such as dentures or bridges. The combination of hardware and implant certainly impacts the tooth implants cost.

Another factor that impacts tooth implants cost is the type of implant that is used. Dentists these days have a selection of more than 2000 different brands and types of implants to choose from, which include different options for almost every treatment situation.

With all of this in mind, the national average for tooth implants cost is about $2000-$4000 depending on the type of implant. This cost is impacted by everything mentioned above, and by other factors such as operating costs for the dentist, which is of course higher for larger cities, particularly on the coasts. Looking for a reputable board certified dentist who has comparable pricing can be difficult because of the range of options, but it is worth discussing treatment options with several dentists before making a decision. Dr. Potepalov is happy to discuss tooth implants cost and treatment options with new and return patients.
